Christmas TV

Okay, I give up - Thanksgiving has come and gone, so I guess it's officially okay to get buried in Christmas cheer. A rare event has occurred at my house this week - I've actually watched a decent bit of television. Of course, I'm actually at home these days and I have a raging respiratory infection, but hey, who's counting those things?

So I noticed while surfing the tube that all the Christmas shows are starting to play - you know, all the fun stuff that you waited for every year when you were a kid. Unless, of course, you're young enough to have owned the dvd and watched it on your own television in your own room - in which case, you are far too young to be listening to the rants of a middle-aged woman. But let me explain for a moment how things were - you see, back in the old days, the "good" shows only came on once a year (Christmas stuff, Charlie Brown Halloween/Thanksgiving, The Wizard of Oz), and you either caught it or you missed out. And I REALLY mean caught it - like as in live. There were no VCR (until much later) and definitely no way to pause live tv or rewind.

So I was trying to decide exactly when I should break out my videos and start my traditional once-a-year watching party. Do I sneak them in when my husband is working, or do I torture him with my childish pleasures? I'm thinking torture is in order for the Christmas season. :)

Then there's the issue of what to start with and do you save the best for last. And I have all the good stuff, all the way from Rudolf to that kid that will shoot his eye out with a bb gun. And let's face it, who doesn't love How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original, not that horrid other version)? But I think my all-time favorite is The Year Without a Santa Claus. I simply love Heat Miser and Cold Miser, and yes, I can indeed sing both of their theme songs. Now see, that's information that you definitely needed.

So what's your favorite Christmas show??????

It always makes me smile when The Christmas Story comes on, and Charlie Brown and Rudolph! It wouldn't be Christmas without them. :) ;)

I always feel good after watching It's a Wonderful Life. That movie really puts things in perspective for me - though I can only sit through it no more than once a year! Then there's White Christmas - gotta love some Bing Crosby...

My all-time favorite is the original Miracle on 34th Street.

I love White Christmas, Holiday Inn, March of the Wooden Soldiers followed by all the animated features especially Frosty The Snowman.

Love The Grinch (but not the new one). I also enjoy Frosty the Snowman. The old one is great but I'm beginning to enjoy the new one (John Goodman?) more because my kids like it.

I love The Christmas Story. Got a catalog the other day that sells the leg lamp--fra-jeel-ee.

I watched The Grinch last night on TV and felt like I was eight again. Even with commercials, there's definitely something special about waiting for the once-a-year chance to watch it on TV.

Oh, there are so many!

Rudolph, of course. One of my favorite made-for-TV movies is Jaclyn Smith's The Night They Saved Christmas. I loved last year's The Christmas Card, too. It's on Hallmark tonight.

Kelly - I always loved Charlie Brown Christmas, but then I love all the Charlie Brown holiday shows.

Hi Todd! Hope you're feeling better. I don't like to do the sad ones, but I agree that it's just not Christmas without a little Bing.

Hi dru - all great selections!

Absolutely, positively "How The Grinch Stole Christmas." The original, animated version narrated by Boris Karloff.

I can recite about 80% of it and love the "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" song.

"Every Who down in Whoville loved Christmas alot. But the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not!"

I'll spare you the rest...

Wendy - I haven't seen the new one, but I guess I'll have to give it a whirl since you don't think it's simply awful. :)

LOL Jaye - careful with that catalog..you may shoot your eye out.

Hi Leah - I totally agree. And granted, I caved and bought the dvd's, but I only watch them one time a year. May be silly, but it's become my personal tradition.

Hi tori - I haven't seen the JSmith one either. Guess I need to turn on the tv more often. :)

Hi toni - I'm right there with you! No one likes to watch these shows with me because I do the songs (and maybe a dance or two). But it's so much fun! :)

I have a Christmas favorite -- definitely "The Christmas Story"; Ralphie and the BB gun are great, and after reading all of Jean Shepherd's short stories, I can't imagine anybody better than Darren McGavin to play Ralphie's Old Man.

I also realized that the 1st Christmas movie/show I saw this season was ... Die Hard (the first one). I had no idea that I considered it a Christmas movie until I was half way through it the other night.

Acres of gorgeous man-flesh, abundant gratuitous explosions, snippets of smart-assery galore, all set to a back ground of Christmas decorations and a Christmas carol sound track. Oh yeah. This is my kind of Christmas movie!

LOL!

LOL, Pink - I never thought about it that way, but I guess you CAN consider Die Hard a Christmas movie. I saw Fred Claus a couple of weeks ago. Guess I need to blog it, huh?

Chevy Chase National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Love to watch it every year. Love the scenes involving the squirrel. Like the theme song.

My favorite is Rudolph and Charlie Brown Christmas specials. Oh, last night I saw a hilarious Xmas special with Shrek. My husband and I were laughing our heads off! Looks like I have a new favorite now! My husband found one Saturday a Christmas special that ran all the old Christmas shows in years past. It was a wonderul trip down memory lane! Oh, how can I forget my favorite Hard Rock, Coco and Joe cartoon along with Suzy Snowflake cartoon. They are classics!
